COVID-19: updated 24/03/2020
God is our refuge and strength, our helper in the troubles that greatly beset us. So we will not fear when the earth is troubled. Nations are in turmoil, kingdoms totter, He lifts His voice, the earth rocks. "Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The Lord of Hosts is with us, the God of Jacob is our protector.
- verses from Psalm 45
Dear friends in Christ,
We find ourselves in a period of uncertainty as each day the situation appears to change. Only yesterday morning I announced the suspension of public worship. We had planned to continue with just three of our community in a church closed to the public, observing distancing and hygiene protocols, with the intention of live-streaming these services for everyone else.
Within hours, this plan became unfeasible, and the Prime Minister's announcement of a lockdown later that evening rendered it impossible.
We must now retreat into the catacombs of our homes but, as a Christian community, we can still worship God together through the blessing of modern technology. Services of St Melangell's have been transferred to an improvised domestic chapel where I shall offer the divine services as best I can.
Planned services are detailed in our calendar as usual. These will be live-streamed on our Facebook page. (You do not need a Facebook account to access this.) You can print the booklets below, (which are formatted for back-to-back printing), and join in the service remotely. While this can never be a long-term substitute for full participation, we are doing the best we can under the current circumstances.
I remain contactable by telephone and online forms of communication.
In these challenging times, let us continue to remain firm in our faith in Christ the Healer and place ourselves and the whole world under the protecting veil of the Most Holy Mother of God.
With love in Christ,
Sub tuum præsidium confugimus, sancta Dei Genitrix;
nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus.
Sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper,
Virgo gloriosa et benedicta!
Under your protection, we take refuge, O holy Mother of God:
do not despise our petitions in times of trouble:
but deliver us always from danger
O glorious and blessed Virgin.
